Plant Diagnostic Laboratory

The UConn Plant Diagnostic Laboratory operates with a drive to deliver quality analyses and approachable solutions to complex plant health challenges. Using advanced laboratory technology, we conduct thorough investigations to identify pathogens and pests causing harm to plant material. Our findings facilitate comprehensive diagnostic reports to stakeholders, whom we work with closely to provide individualized support and guidance through management techniques.

The PDL is a resource utilized by scientists, agricultural professionals, and homeowners alike. By collaborating with colleagues within the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources (CAHNR), the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture (PSLA), and the George Leigh Minor Plant & Soil Health Center, we offer solutions backed by professional expertise and a dedication to excellence.   .

Each plant sample the PDL receives is logged into our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) using the information provided on the sample submission form. We utilize diagnostic techniques to analyze plant material—i.e. tissue dissection, microscopic examination, sample culturing, and molecular analysis. Results are conveyed through a comprehensive diagnostic sample report, with an emphasis on quality and reliability. We communicate with stakeholders throughout the entire sample process, answering questions and welcoming feedback to improve our methodology. Remain in contact with submitters throughout the entire process, communicating conduct a thorough analysis All analyses follow a common workflow: samples are received, logged, prepared, analyzed using the appropriate method/instrument, and reviewed for quality before results are reported.

The UConn Plant Diagnostic Laboratory is a part of the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources (CAHNR), and the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture (PSLA). We work in close collaboration with the Department of Extension and the entire George Leigh Minor Plant & Soil Health Center team.
