Anyone who wants to learn more about composting and is willing to share composting skills and knowledge with the public may apply. Participants do not need to be experienced composters before enrolling. 

This is a train-the-trainer program. Participants should plan to attend all classes and complete outreach activities after the course. 

UConn Master Composters help Connecticut residents, schools, community gardens, municipalities, and local organizations understand practical composting. Outreach may include presentations, workshops, exhibits, tabling at events, demonstrations, school composting support, community garden assistance, or other approved compost education activities. 

• Answer common composting questions from the public 
• Explain/teach how to set up and maintain backyard composting systems 
• Support composting education at schools, gardens, fairs, farmers markets, libraries, and community events 
• Promote sound use of finished compost in gardens and landscapes 
• Help participants understand vermicomposting and small-scale composting options 

The 2026 program is planned as a hybrid course with two in-person Saturday sessions and two online evening sessions. The in-person sessions will be held at the Middlesex County Extension Center in Haddam. 

• Program fee: $100 per student 
• Class size: Limited to 25 participants 
• Format: Hybrid, with required in-person and online sessions 
• Optional field trip: Date and location to be determined 

To receive a UConn Master Composter Certificate and Badge, participants must attend all class sessions and complete approved outreach projects totaling about 20 volunteer hours. 

Outreach expectations and examples will be discussed during the final class session. Participants will be asked to report outreach activities using the program’s outreach reporting form.
